Volunteer in a Wilton School

Welcome back to a new school year. As we all look forward to a year filled with exciting learning opportunities for your children, I am pleased to share information regarding a safety measure currently in place in our schools. In September 2018, we instituted a new procedure for volunteers working independently with students. This procedure was put in place to improve and expand upon screening protocols for volunteers in our school buildings. All school volunteers are now classified into two groups: adults who spend time with students while in the presence of Wilton Public Schools staff and adults who spend time with students while not in the presence of Wilton Public Schools staff. More specifics about these two groups are outlined below.

Group One Volunteers:

  • assist in the classroom, library learning commons, cafeteria, or any other location in school buildings where other Wilton Public Schools staff members are present; or
  • attend a school function during the day or outside of school hours when other Wilton Public Schools staff members are present.

Group Two Volunteers:

  • assist in the classroom, library learning commons, cafeteria, or any other location in school buildings where other Wilton Public Schools staff members are NOT present at any point during the volunteer’s visit; or
  • accompany students on a field trip during or outside of the school day; or
  • accompany students on an overnight field trip; or
  • serve as student interns.

Anyone who would like to be a group two volunteer will be required to submit to a background check through the Secure Volunteer portal of the Background Investigation Bureau every other year. This confidential screening will be conducted after an interested volunteer submits his or her consent to this check, which includes searches of: county court databases, criminal record databases, security watch lists, and sex offender registries covering all 50 states. Please note that if you submitted to a screening last year and were approved as a volunteer, you do not need to register again this year.

As the school year begins and you plan your involvement in your child’s classroom, it is important to remember our volunteer protocols. If you commit to a responsibility that falls under the group two volunteer category (i.e. chaperoning, volunteering to work with students without other staff members present), you must submit to a background check or use your background check approval from the 2018- 2019 school year. To submit to a background check for the first time, you should click 'Apply Now' on the image below. (Please note that you will not be charged to participate.) The approval process typically takes two business days; however, you should plan to be screened several weeks in advance of your scheduled volunteer commitment.

Once your background check is complete and you have been approved, you will receive a Secure Volunteer hologram badge by mail within two weeks. This badge should be worn when you serve as a group two volunteer in your child’s school or at a school-sponsored event. In addition, your name will be added to the “approved group two volunteers” list for your child’s school. If you were approved last year and have lost your badge, you may order a new badge through the portal.

Please note that if you do not sign up to work as a group two volunteer, then you do not need to complete any additional screenings beyond the standard driver’s license screening required for every visitor at the main entrance of each school.

We believe these procedures, in addition to the security measures currently in place, help keep our schools safe for your children. Thank you in advance for your support.
