SBA Results Show WPS Gains in Reading & Mathematics

The Smarter Balanced Assessment results from the CT Department of Education indicate that the academic growth of Wilton students last year was at historically high levels. This was particularly true in the area of mathematics, where students ranked first or second in terms of student growth in the District’s Reference Group (DRG-A) which includes neighboring districts such as Darien, New Canaan and Westport. In English-Language Arts, students ranked first or second in academic growth in DRG-A in 4/5 grade levels.

Other highlights from the data include:

  • The number of students meeting benchmark on the SBA increased by an average of 8% in ELA and 13% in Mathematics
  • The number of students with disabilities meeting benchmark on the SBA increased by an average of 15% in ELA and 12% in Mathematics
  • Wilton students ranked 1st or 2nd in terms of the percentage of students meeting benchmark on the SB in both reading and mathematics in grades 6-8, compared to other DRG-A districts
  • Wilton students ranked 1st in terms of the percentage of students meeting benchmark on the Next Generation Science Assessment (NGSA) grades 8, compared to other DRG-A districts

“I am very pleased with the growth demonstrated by our students on the Smarter Balanced Assessment.”, said Superintendent of Schools Kevin Smith. “Their growth is a direct result of the tremendous focus and effort of our instructional staff across the district. I look forward to continued success this school year.”
