Miller-Driscoll Shortened Day Reminders!   Thursday 11/16 - Tuesday 11/21

1:10 pm - ALL students getting picked up will be called to the pickup lines.

1:15 pm - Bus Dismissal Begins

Any changes to student plans must be entered in School Dismissal Manager by 10:30 am SHARP on shortened days.

School Dismissal Manager - CLICK HERE

  • K-2 students getting picked up with PreK siblings should be picked up at the ORANGE pickup location so that it defaults to the younger student.  Please change School Dismissal Manager to the correct color, if necessary.

  • Pre-K and Kindergarten students MUST be met at the bus stop by a parent/guardian or emergency contact. If there is no one to meet your student, he or she will be brought back to Miller-Driscoll's Main Office. (Please note, discretion is used by the bus drivers when dropping off students in grades 1 and 2. For example, if someone is usually outside to meet the bus and they do not see anyone waiting on a shortened day, the bus driver may bring the student back to school if they feel that it is an unsafe situation even if they are a student in 1st or 2nd grade).

  • THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED on shortened days, which means NO LUNCH or MILK is SERVED so please send students in with a hearty snack over the next few days.

In-Person Conferences:

If you choose to have your conference here at Miller-Driscoll, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled conference to allow time to check in.

K-2 Check-in = Main Office

PreK Check-in = PreK Office

LOST AND FOUND and BOOK FAIR

While you are at your conference, please visit the Lost and Found racks near the Main office and the Book Fair in the Library Learning Commons from 2:00-4:30pm.

We have many jackets, sweatshirts, water bottles on our Lost and Found racks. Any items left behind will be donated after the Thanksgiving break to the Turnover Shop in town.  Items labeled with names were returned to students.

Friday November 17th is “Stuffy day”

The winner for our school-wide Spirit day voting was Stuffy Day. Students may bring ONE SMALL (i.e. fits in a backpack) Stuffy to join them for school this Friday.

[Tuesday, Nov 21 at 8:41 AM]
Important Miller Driscoll Short Day reminder!

Please review your School Dismissal Manager plans for today, Tuesday, November 21 as soon as possible. We have had several families over the last few days with plans for afterschool activities that were cancelled or changed due to the short day schedules, but not reflected in School Dismissal Manager. These changes must be made in SDM by 10:30am!
(Pickups begin at 1:10pm and buses will start loading at 1:15pm.)

Thank you for your assistance in getting all of our students to the correct destination!

And we all hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Roundtable Discussion on Mattering
Thursday, November 9th 7-8:30 PM
Comstock Community Center
Continue the conversation! Join us for a follow up discussion on the best-selling Jennifer Wallace book “Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – And What We Can Do About It.” This is intended to be an interactive discussion, giving an opportunity for parents and caregivers to discuss their experiences and thoughts around mattering (breaking down the correlation between achievement and self-worth).
Mattering is about how we treat ourselves and how we treat each other. It’s a research-backed mindset and a skill set that can be learned.

Roundtable facilitators will lead a group discussion on what Mattering means to those in the room and how to view self-worth independent from achievement. Susan Rappaport is an LCSW and Psychotherapist in private practice in Wilton, CT and on the Board of Directors of Wilton Youth Council. Vanessa Elias is a Certified Parent Coach and founder of Thrive With a Guide. Kerianne Fanelli is a Licensed Master Social Worker and founder of Mom Circle, LLC.

November 1, 2023

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers:

Last May, through PA 23-208 the legislature amended Section 10-15c of the Connecticut General Statutes to establish September 1 as the new cutoff birthdate for children seeking admission to kindergarten beginning with the 2024-2025 school year:

Effective July 1, 2024, public schools shall…be open to all children five years of age and over who reach age five on or before the first day of September of any school year, and each such child shall have, and shall be so advised by the appropriate school authorities, an equal opportunity to participate in the activities, programs and courses of study offered in such public schools, at such time as the child becomes eligible to participate in such activities, programs and courses of study, without discrimination on account of races, as defined in section 46a-51, color, sex, gender identity or expression, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability; provided a child who has not reached the age of five on or before the first day of September of the school year may be admitted, (1), upon a written request by the parent or guardian of such child to the principal of the school in which such child would be enrolled, and (2) following an assessment of such child, conducted by such principal and an appropriate staff member of the school, to ensure that admitting such child is developmentally appropriate.

We recognize that this change may present a challenge for some families who were anticipating sending their children to Kindergarten based on the old age cutoff date. In light of this and in response to the change in the law, Wilton Public Schools will admit Kindergarten students who will turn five between September 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 with the following procedure:

  • Parents of children who are age-ineligible as a result of the change in the law must submit a letter requesting early admission to Kindergarten.

  • Mrs. Coon and/or a Miller-Driscoll staff member will meet with families for the purpose of assessment. The meeting will include a discussion of the child’s readiness for Kindergarten and a review of the CT Early Learning and Developmental Standards (ELDS).

This procedure will be in place for families seeking early admission for the 2024-2025 school year only while the district monitors the transition and formulates a revised procedure for subsequent years.

Sincerely,

Kevin J. Smith, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools
