Wilton Public Schools: Integrated Pest Management & Pesticide Policy Notice
Wilton Public Schools is committed to providing a safe, healthy learning and playing environment for all students, staff, and community members. In accordance with Connecticut state regulations regarding pesticide applications in public schools, this page outlines our district’s protocols, practices, and policies.
State Regulations & School Grounds Compliance
Pursuant to Connecticut State Statutes, the application of traditional pesticides is strictly restricted on school grounds, with complete prohibitions in place for elementary and lower-grade facilities (K–8).
-
Miller-Driscoll & K–8 Facilities: Traditional pesticide application is not permitted on elementary school grounds or lower-grade facilities by state law. Consequently, district grounds maintenance focuses on mechanical, natural, and integrated cultural controls rather than chemical treatment (e.g., natural management of clover, knotweed, and weeds around school buildings).
-
Wilton High School: Any permitted applications on high school grounds are strictly regulated and comply fully with state-mandated parent/guardian notification guidelines.
Pest Management Approach
Wilton Public Schools utilizes an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for all district facilities and grounds to manage pests using safe, practical, and environmentally responsible methods.
Indoor Facilities & Targeted Interventions
-
No Scheduled Treatments: The district does not run a routine or calendar-based chemical spraying program inside school buildings.
-
Situation-Based Control: Interventions occur solely on an as-needed, situational basis (e.g., addressing active ants in a culinary instructional area or bees near a playground).
-
Natural & Alternative Solutions: Our contracted pest management vendor, Ehrlich Pest Control, employs natural, alternative, and minimal-impact treatments to resolve targeted pest issues.
Athletic Fields & Grounds Management
-
Managed by Town of Wilton Parks & Recreation: Application and upkeep of athletic turf fields are overseen by the Town of Wilton Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the school district.
-
Application Schedule: Turf applications on athletic fields occur once per year in early July.
-
Scope Restrictions: Treatments are limited exclusively to athletic turf areas. No applications are made around school building perimeters.
-
Staff Certification: Grounds personnel participate in IPM training through the state and the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association (CRPA) to ensure safe, compliant practices and hire a licensed subcontractor for a once-a-year application.
24-Hour Prior Notification
In compliance with Connecticut law, Wilton Public Schools provides public notice at least 24 hours prior to any qualifying pesticide application within a school building or on school grounds.
-
Scheduled or emergency notifications, when required, will be posted directly to the official district website and communicated through standard district notice channels.
