Support Services

At Wilton Public Schools, we believe that every student deserves access to grade-level content with the individualized support they need to succeed. We also believe that supporting students extends far beyond academics. Our work is centered on the whole child – nurturing students academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally so they develop the confidence, resilience, independence, and skills they need to become their very best, both today and in the future.

One of the guiding beliefs of our department is that Support Services is not a place, but a continuum of care delivered in partnership with families. Our work focuses on six core priorities:

  • Wellness: Strengthening social-emotional skills, emotional regulation, and communication through evidence-based programs like DBT in schools, Social Thinking and Everyday Speech.

  • Integrated Supports: Collaborating across general education, special education, specialized services, and families to support each learner’s unique strengths and needs.

  • Student Engagement: Removing barriers to grade-level learning using approaches like Structured Literacy (Orton-Gillingham) and Building Thinking Classrooms.

  • Progress Monitoring: Using regular data to celebrate successes, adjust supports, and foster student independence.

  • Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS): Providing a continuum of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions so every student gets the right support at the right time.

  •  Families as Partners: Perhaps our greatest strength is the partnership we share with our families. You know your child better than anyone, and your voice is essential in helping us understand their strengths, interests, and goals. Together, we build meaningful partnerships rooted in trust, collaboration, and mutual respect. Our department maintains an open-door policy, and we encourage you to reach out whenever you have questions, ideas, concerns, or successes to celebrate. We are committed to open, transparent communication because we know that when schools and families work together, students benefit.

General Information

By law, every child with a disability is guaranteed a "free and appropriate public education" (FAPE). The Wilton Public Schools meet this requirement by offering a broad range of programs and support services designed to help students succeed in the most inclusive setting possible.

Continuum of Special Education Services

Wilton Public Schools provides support tailored to each student's needs, ranging from minor support to specialized instruction:

  • In-class support: Limited special education assistance within general education classrooms.

  • Co-taught classes: Instruction delivered jointly by a general education teacher and a special education teacher.

  • Pull-out services: Targeted, intensive skill development outside the regular classroom.

  • Specialized environments: Self-contained special education classes, homebound or hospital instruction, and specialized out-of-district schools.

Related Support Services

To help eligible students fully benefit from their special education program, the district offers additional services, including:

  • Speech and language pathology

  • Occupational and physical therapy

  • Adaptive physical education

  • Specialized transportation, nursing, and medical services

Eligibility and the Placement Process

  • Legal Qualification: To receive services or accommodations, a student must have a disability requiring specialized instruction under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or qualify under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

  • Planning and Placement Team (PPT): Eligibility is determined by a PPT made up of district professionals and the student's parents or guardians.

  • Starting the Process: Parents or teachers concerned about a potential learning disability should contact the school principal to request a PPT meeting.

  • Written Plan: For eligible students, the team develops a written plan detailing the necessary educational services.

Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

Services must be delivered in the "least restrictive environment" possible. Under federal law, students with disabilities must be educated alongside non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. Removal to separate classes or specialized schooling occurs only when a student's disability prevents satisfactory learning in a regular classroom, even with supplementary aids and support.
